<- - Back to Roof top solar market in India - ->
I believe the solar Roof top market in India will grow similar to the way cell phones reached the masses. ....However not at its pace..Today roof top is within reach of select few, similar to cell phones reach was during its initial days.
Over period of time with better technology, manufacturing process, system intelligence,, commoditization and price optimization, the market will reach significant section of mass market.
Since there is certain extent of customization for roof top installs today there is need for certain amount of domain understanding before one can provide satisfactory system solution to customers.
And as highlighted above, there is limited availability of trained workforce for activities right from pre-project guidance to effective commissioning.
The serious customers are moving cautiously and rushing in deciding on projects, till they are fully convinced about utility and cost benefit aspects.
To build the momentum for growth, both areas need to be addressed.... training of quality workforce and also spreading the awareness in systematic way to interested customer / end users.
First step is to be from the state and central governments. They have to promulgate viable policies aiming to speed up solarisation. Once this is done everything will move smoothly gaining momentum as time pass on. Research has found that solar isolation is a kind of contagion. The neighbor will be enthused to install solar plant.
Regarding skilled labour force the governments are to plan in advance by creating new courses in ITCs. Governments should realize that future of power sector lies on solar plants. How can the nation rely on depleting resources? Solar is abundant, predictable, perpetual and now it is cheaper. What else we need to go for solar?
It is a matter of time (2-3 years) when solar will be cheaper than fossil. I wait for the day when utilities negotiate with grid connected solar producers in the rate of purchase of energy that is generated from solar. Once a pragmatic Feed in Tariff is decided the 'take off' will start and in a few years it will take an exponential trajectory. It happened in Germany. Note that in December 2011 (one month) Germany added 3.5 GW solar capacity to the grid. Their target for 2011 was 3.5 GW and they added 7.5 GW in 2011. An amazing achievement!
